‍

WORKING WITH A TV COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION COMPANY

Our producers come from TV advertising agencies and TV advertising production backgrounds in London and have vast experience bringing TV adverts to the screen.

We assign a dedicated producer from the start of each project. This producer works directly with you and your team; they are your point of contact at Toast TV and will guide you through every step.

For a full step-by-step walkthrough of each stage, see our TV ad production guide from concept to broadcast guide.

‍

THE IDEAS STAGE

We always present multiple creative routes, giving clients a broad range of ideas. These ideas will range from outline advert concepts to sample TV advert scripts. Clients get the fun job of picking a route, and we refine the ideas further to build a campaign. We’re used to working with in-house marketing teams at our clients; often, a collaborative approach is the best way to generate ideas that resonate with your audience.

We’ll start clearing your TV commercial script at this stage. Every UK TV advert must follow a set of rules before going on air. Getting these approvals early in production helps prevent later bottlenecks. Clearcast will flag any issues with the creative route or list the substantiation needed for claims that may appear in the creative.

‍

BUDGETING A TV ADVERT PRODUCTION

Budgeting for commercial production can be daunting, especially if it’s your first time considering TV advertising costs. We are always very transparent in our budgets. Once we agreeAnd once we have agreed on a budget, we stick to it.

As a TV advertising production company with a long track record of quality adverts, we know how much quality costs. We also know how to save when needed. There is a level of quality we like to stay above. Putting a low-quality advert on TV will tarnish your brand. Please use the form above if you need a ballpark budget for a TV advert.

TV advertising is one of the more expensive marketing options, but nothing comes close to the reacof TV advertesearch from Nielseshows that 568 TV advertisers spent less than £250,000 in 2022. With the reach of a TV advert, it’s a compelling option for any marketing mix.

MEDIA BUYING

Buying media goes hand in hand with advert production. An advert needs to reach its target audience. TV Advert slots are purchased between TV shows that target your demographic as strictly as possible.

Efficient media buying is possible when done at scale. Toast collaborates with an extensive media buying network but retains the personal touch of a smaller agency.

BVOD advertising and SVOD offer a more effective, measurable way to connect with consumers. As a result, brands are reallocating some of their advertising budgets to seize VOD opportunities, making it a pivotal component of modern marketing strategies.

‍

PRE PRODUCTION

During pre-production, we will work out the logistics of any filming that needs to take place. If the chosen route is animation, we’ll generally start storyboarding at this stage.

Before filming, we’ll hold a final pre-production meeting to sign off on all aspects of the shoot so everyone knows what will happen during the advert filming. The Pre-production meeting locks down the location, wardrobe, talent and any props.

‍

‍

FILMING OR ANIMATION

Several factors govern the choice between a live-action and an animated TV advert, including timeline, budget, and aesthetics. Budget often drives this choice, as animated adverts can be a cost-effective way to enter TV advertising. Animated characters in TV adverts are appealing; they’re also unlikely to be spotted drunkenly stumbling out of a nightclub at 3 am. Sometimes a blend between live-action and animation works; the Loaf TV advert uses simple motion creatively.

‍

THE TV COMMERCIAL SHOOT

The shoot day is when the TV commercial director’s vision comes to life on screen. At Toast, we pride ourselves on running extremely organised shoots. A well-run shoot is a happy shoot. The director will organise a shot list before the shoot day. We recently filmed a TV advert for Hays travel featuring Davina McCall, much of the shoot happened on the street. Managing a busy external shoot and talent obviously brings challenges, but with good planning everything went swimmingly.

‍

EDITING AND EFFECTS

The footage from the advert shoot is edited into a rough version of the TV commercial, locking down shot selection but not timings. We refine the edit, graphics, effects, sound, and voice-over until the finished TV commercial is polished and ready. When editing endframes and packshots it’s always good to keep advert reversioning in mind. We make sure edits are built to allow flexibility later.

‍
REGULATORY APPROVAL

Each TV advert that goes on air in the UK needs approval before it’s shown on TV. Clearcast is the UK’s regulatory body handling all TV adverts. Clearcast checks any claims made in an advert and will ask for written substantiation to back them up.

Clearcast will accept TV commercial scripts, rough cuts, and final TV adverts. Toast advises obtaining script approval before planning any TV advert production, as some script changes aren’t possible once filming has begun.

‍

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TV ADVERTISING

TV advertising formats are becoming diverse. If you’re looking to drive potential customers to a website, then DRTV – direct response TV advertising is for you. DRTV adverts include a call to action that asks viewers to call a phone number or visit a website.

Brand advertising is different; it aims to build awareness of your brand or product line. Brand adverts can change the public’s perception of a brand or product. A well-executed brand TV advertising campaign can set the right tone and build trust over time.

Product adverts, are similar to DRTV adverts but usually focus on promoting a service, product or app. They can be as simple as an explainer that shows how easy a product is to use. For app developers, creating an effective TV commercial is an essential part of their marketing toolkit. TV adverts are a fast way to build a product or service’s user base and gain market share.
